How to Shine as a Leader in Your Organization Without Sacrificing All Your Free Time

Discover the pros and cons of different options to develop your leadership skills.

I see you. You’re smart, ambitious and want to turn those big goals into a reality. You want to be recognized as a competent leader in your organization.

Maybe you are new to a leadership position of maybe you have been in one for a while and want to kick those skills up a notch. Either way, you understand the importance of developing these skills to advance to positions with more challenging work and greater rewards.

Here’s the problem. Leadership can’t be learned in a day and requires a supportive and safe space to develop skills, discuss challenges and explore areas of personal growth. Your schedule is nearly full, so you need a way to rise without burning out in the process.

So how do you approach this important area of skill development?

Enrol in Leadership Degree Program – This will give you some credentials and may be a requirement depending on your ultimate goal, but if you don’t need the certificate for advancement, University programs can be expensive, time-consuming, and often lack 1:1 personal attention and practical skill application.

Read Leadership Books – This is a cheaper option but lacks the opportunity to ask questions or discuss ideas with others. It can also be time-consuming finding the books that provide you with the most value.

Internal Company Training – This is usually free for you but often covers a limited range of topics and participants often feel limited in exploring their own areas of growth. Most of us don’t want to discuss the areas we need to develop in front of peers or managers.

Work With a Coach – This is a cost-efficient practical approach which can tailor skill development specifically to your needs in a confidential setting.

If you’re new to the idea of working with a coach, you may be wondering what approach is best for you.

One on One Coaching – This is a great option if you have solid leadership skills and need a sounding board to create action plans for specific challenges. Usually this is the most expensive option but is the most individualized. This type of coaching does not normally include skill development content.

Group Coaching Program – Often offers program content and the opportunity to discuss issues and situations in a group setting. You can learn a lot from others but there are limits on your access to the coach for your specific questions. This environment lacks confidentiality of a 1:1 setting, which may be important when discussing your growing edges.

Combined Group and One on One Coaching with Access to Content for Specific Skill Development – This type of group learning creates the opportunity to learn from others and discuss general concepts while the inclusion of 1:1 coaching allows for focus on personal growth in a confidential setting. Access to program content enhances learning with the opportunity for self-directed skill development.
